    music on a website

As told in many other similar posts, there are a lot of solutions around the web, independently from the programming editor you're using.

Online mediaplayers are generally free for no-commercial sites; personally, i like very much JW Player (http://www.longtailvideo.com/)
It has cool plugins and it's ready for HTML5. You'll find a good online wizard to generate the code too.

    Good luck

DON'T DO IT.... People hate that, going onto a website and suddenly RRARRRRRRRR!! BANG BANG!. Instead place in a non-start mp3 player on your site. There is even copy&paste scripts out there. This also gives people the option to press play and even flick between tracks.

JW Player is both video and audio player, as usual for web mediaplayers.
Give a try to the wizard, there's various examples such as "single video, single song, video playlist, song playlist..."

And yes, people don't like to hear sounds while navigating, but personally i love new-age and ambient music, so good luck again

Maybe you can check out this website music player, which comes with several different music player skins, and can support mp3 files directly

I was in the same situation and here's what I have done so far; it's
fairly simple, though I haven't check it out for cross-browser compatibility, etc.

First get a digital sound file you want, in, say, wav or MP3 format.
drop it into a file and somewhere on your web page use the following:

    <embed src="your-folder-name/the_sound_file.mp3" autostart="true" loop="false" hidden="true">

you can adjust the parameters to suit you.

Let me know how it works!

Flash or HTML-video or Divx or ... ?

    Hello,

Flash (H263) or Divx (H264) are not comaptible to HTML-5-Video at this time.
Flashplayer yu can easy creater with Adobe CS 5 (predefined GUI possible).
DivX-player for non commercial context you find at DivX.com. Also mp4
    in this content free.
HTML-5-Video dont need any programm: Inside of Browser a GUI is
    implemented (f.f. see opera.com).
If you want, goto my website twseiten.com (www.twseiten.com) for
a flash player for non commercial content.

Tip: Use HTML-5-Video and Flash (can play mp4).

    Cu.

There are a lot of players you can plug-in your site. You just have to do a simple search and tons of results will go your way.

I have one piece of advice though. Make the playing of music controlled by the user. Do not play it automatically as it will affect the time your web page will load. Just put it on a side where it will be noticed so that the user can play it.

There is nothing more annoying that having a background music play automatically for you.
