I think she is asking for more than just issues on how to code considering she's getting her degree in web design. Just a thought.
I would make sure to spend some time on issues of accessibility and standards which are only going to become all the more important as web development moves on. Read "Designing with Web Standards" by Jeffery Zeldman. It's a book about how web design got screwed up in the first place and what is being done to correct that.

I agree with Spufi. Read DWWS, as Mr. Zeldman explaines the current state of the web. It's a very good read, and Jeffrey Zeldman is an excellent writer, keeping the topic as light as possible. I'm sure Zeldman's work(s) is many people's first glimps into a world of design and programming that many have not even taken the time to consider.
