Scaling to fit screen resolution

I was wondering if someone could push me in the right directions. What i am trying to do is build a mobile website that scales to fit if the phone is turned on the site
eg. phone is upright

phone is then turned to its side

phones screen scales to the x y

my problem is my mobile website doesnt, it just has white spaces on either side.

i have scaled the website to work upright at 320x480

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!

The design needs to be liquid (i.e. using % for the width instead of pixels) in order for the page to stretch/shrink when the phone orientation changes.
