File Upload Progress

I'm currently using APC to check on the progress of file uploads.

I've noticed a lot of the big sites, like r@p1dshare, don't make ajax calls while files are uploading?

How are they checking the status of the upload? Any ideas?

Is APC a good solution or should I be considering others?

Im not sure what APC is, but most uploads without ajax are going to use either flash or java for progress. That is also how people usually implement large uploads. ...HTML 5, i believe has a progress element, but am not sure how widely implemented that is yet, you might read up on it...could be an easy solution for you.
