How do you put credit card facility on site

Hi,
Does anybody know, how one would put the payment system online.
If you want to accept credit card payment, do you have to get a machine or something, and how would you integrate this system and process in the website.
If anybody can help me with this,

You need a website payment gateway:

You need to signup with either payPal or a company like authorize.net and use their gateway code on your site... it is not easy, hire a professional.
