I wouldn't rely too much on W3Schools stats. They don't take a sampling from a wide variety of sites. Those stats are only for their site, and the demographic for a web dev site are the least likely to be using IE.
The resource most commonly referenced these days is StatsCounter. Using these stats, IE is higher than W3Schools, but still lower than you expected. Chrome has been significantly cutting into IE's market share.
