Div does not cover elements below in IE. Fine in firefox and chrome

Hi everyone here at the forum

I would please like to know why this works perfectly in Chrome and Firefox, but not in IE?

    http://www.hosthub.co.za/mariana/

The code is all contained in the html file, so you can please have a look at it.

I want the div with bgcolor that is black to cover the image of the tree below while it loads, and resizes. In firefox and chrome it does this, but not in IE. In IE it strips away.

    Thanks in advance!

You don't have a <!DOCTYPE> statement at the start of your document, so browsers (especially MSIE) render the page in "quirks mode". With a complete <!DOCTYPE> statement, browsers are set to "Standards Compliance Mode" in which they do their best to render the page according to the W3C Standards - which is what you want, even if it breaks your current design. Search on "doctype switch" and you'll find some good advice. Good luck!
