fonts in a select option box

I'm trying to get the text in a select option box so that each character has the same width. I've tried
<option value="val" style="font-family:courier;">
text here
</option>
with no luck.
How do you do this ?

I wouldn't be surprised if you can't change the font within <option></option> tags. But if you want to select a specific font for an entire <select> list, add your style setting to the <select> tag.
