Website Protection with .htacceess and .htpasswd

I have created the .htaccess and .htpasswd files, and when I reach my website I am prompted to enter my username and password. I enter my username and password, but the pages I attempt to access show 404 errors. Can someone show me what may be wrong or point me in the right direction?

This has nothing to do with HTML, so you might not get the help you need here.

One thing to keep in mind is that unless the .htaccess and .htpasswd files are in the same directory, you should probably use a complete path (starting with a '/') in the 'AuthUserFile' directive. And be sure that you've properly encoded the user name/password pair value in the .htpasswd file.

If this doesn't help, post your question again in the Server Management forum here, along with the contents of your .htaccess and .htpasswd files.
