    pass javascript variable to html

    Hello,

    I have the following form with a dynamically created select drop down menu:

    Code:
    <form method="post" name="submit" action="my_file.php" accept-charset='UTF-8'>
    <select id="likelihood_category" name="likelihood_category" onchange="update_message(this.options[selectedIndex].text)">
       {foreach value=category from=$likelihood_categories_display}
       <option {$category.selected} value="{$category.value}">{$category.value}</option>
       {/foreach}
    </select>
    </form>
    When an option is selected from the drop down menu, I would like the update_message javascript function to return a variable to my html page that I can use later. Here is my javascript code:

    Code:
    function update_message(field) {
        var category = field;

        if (category == 'Programmatic') {
            // show programmatic info
        }
        if (category == 'Technical') {
            // show technical info
        }
        if (category == 'Safety') {
            // show safety info
        }
    }
    When I get the return variable from the javascript code, I want to be able to do display text depending on what the variable equals.

    eg.:

    if return_var == x
    // display programmatic info
    if return_var == y
    // display technical info
    if retun_var == z
    // display safety info

    Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance!!!

    Considering the fact that HTML doesn't use variables, its not possible. You could easily use a tag that javascript can change the info for, or you could use document.write to write the information to the page, but HTML doesn't vary, its just replaced.

    Thanks for the info burnme!

    Is it possible to dictate where javascript will output the text from document.write? For example, if I want the text to show up on the page in a particular place, how do I dictate where the document.write text will be display?

    Could you give an example of how to use a tag that javascript can change the info for?

    I wanted the page to auto update based on the form selection, but I may just use php variable with a "refresh" button cause I know how to do that. =)

    Here is a link to document.write:

    Also you may want to read up on cookies, may be applicable to as well, here is the overall info list on javascript with examples:
