    renaming urls for SEO

i'm considering renaming a clients pages url to include keywords, for example'

was recently hired to upgrade a website. part of which was to optimize for SE's (which i reluctantly agreed to). was considering renaming the URL's to include keyword phrases, derived the Google keyword/phrase too. for example
    available_pups.html

    to

    french_bulldog_puppies_sale.html

does that seem like a good idea?, any input on this would be appreciated.

    thanks

Tread lightly with keywords in URLs - three or four is OK, and focus on the page topic more than target search phrases. Use all lower case and hyphens, not underscores. It's not a big ranking factor, but it can help. And if you're changing the URLs of pages that are already indexed, it's a good idea to set up 301 redirects from the old URLs to the new ones.

Why not use .htaccess to make them pretty urls?

    Not: ../cute-pups.html

    But: ../cute-pups/

I use .htaccess and QSA for this

yes thank you. i will try.

i had a client on register.com and did try to do that but couldn't get it to work. i even did something ( with the the .htaccess file) where the site would not load!, tech support would not help me.
