Different Technologies of delivering pages

Hello,
I am familiar with php, and know that that is the backbone for facebook and other sites. I am curious to know what the technology behind linkedIn for example is...

Seems a lot of these new sites are loading pages differently? I do not even see a .html or .php extension on them.

Examples:
https://pinterest.com/login/?next=%2F
https://www.yelp.com/signup

What tech are they using(?)

They are not necessarily using different technology (but might). If you use a standard name for your home page, like index.html or index.php, it can be omitted in the URL. So:

http://www.mysite.com/index.html

can be abbreviated to:

http://www.mysite.com/

hmm yea i know that..
but for example
http://www.linkedin.com/home

its not http://www.linkedin.com/home.html or
http://www.linkedin.com/home.php or even http://www.linkedin.com/home.asp

are they doing something special with htaccess or something
