IE8 and compatability mode

Not sure if I'm in the right department, but my problem is a css problem:

in IE8, with compatability mode on, I have a text positioning problem, on one element only; all other windows and mac browswers display correctly; and so does IE 8 when compat mode is tunred off.

So: is there, or where's the best place to look for a way thru, by identifying compatability mode and asking viewer to turn it off... clumsy, but can'y think of anything better.
