issue: firstElementChild --convert to jquery or other

I need some help with the following code as it wont work on IE7:

objects_array[i].firstElementChild.firstElementChild.innerHTML = '^{(' + (i+1) + ')}';

Can someone please provide me with a solution, even in jquery if needed.
