But, Iím torn between what I want to do as a career (and this is because I really donít have knowledge of how the computer field work). There seems to be many jobs in web development itself and it seems like the more wise thing to do is simply concentrate on bettering my web development skills instead of concentrating on making games.
I personally went to school for programming, database management, web development and studied C#, .NET, HTML, SQL, pretty much the main things you would need to get started as a programmer or web developer.
Right after I graduated I found it insanely difficult to find myself a job, mainly because everywhere was either intern (no pay, and I have a huge student loan) or it required 5+ years experience. So neither worked out for me. I ended up finding myself an IT job doing Help Desk. I've been doing IT for 4+ years now, this is because I lost all my skills as a developer and am now probably intermediate versus the pro I used to be. I lost my skills because I stopped developing.
So my advice? Even if you work some crummy job picking up trash, but your dream is to make a website and be in the web dev business. After work go home and just develop, learn, develop. If I could do it all over again I would do that, but I'm now in my late 20's and have A LOT of debt - so it'll take me much longer to achieve my dream.
I'm trying to do my own thing on the side now, and it's slowly building, but if I would have kept doing development for the last 5 years, I would be making wayyyy more money than I already do and I would enjoy my job.
