    SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is the process of improving a website's rankings in the search engines. SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, which can include SEO, but is more closely associated with Pay-Per-Click/Keyword advertising and other promotional activities. Good luck!

    SEO, as it is a part of the SEM. SEO is the act of optimizing HTML and other content of your website for relevant phrases, a key objective to achieve higher natural listings than competing web sites. SEO offers a long term solution for the cheapest qualified traffic and generate long-increased customer inquiries that eventually turn into sales.
    Now SEM is broader than SEO. Includes SEO and other areas to improve visibility on search sites results pages, like paid listings and paid inclusions.
    Conclusion is, SEM as more expensive and possibly more specific, whereas SEO is free and aims to get free search listings.

    SEO (search engine optimization) impacts the organic/natural listings on the search engine results page (SERP). SEO is a process of adjusting both on-site and off-site elements that are known to impact the search engine’s ranking algorithms. The ranking algorithms give the search engines the ability to evaluate websites for their relevancy to a user search query.

    SEM (search engine marketing/paid search/PPC) impacts the sponsored listing areas on the SERP. When your ads are clicked in SEM you are paying per click. So, each time your ad appears there is a dollar value you have placed on that ad you are willing to pay if a qualified search engine user clicks it. This cost varies greatly depending on the competition in your niche, your ad, the keywords you are bidding on and your website (to name a few). With SEM, the amount of traffic you can drive to your website site is directly proportional to the budget you have allocated to pay for clicks.

    SEO is search engine optimizations and is to do with how your pages (URLS) are compiled or presented to a search engine.

    Basic nutshell is your showing nice and tidy front end URLS that use URL rewriting to mask or hide the underlying technology. It adds an additional layer of security to the server because if your hack sees .html then how is that person to know if the underlying technology servicing that site is asp, php, cfm or any number of server sides that exist. It would take some research to find that out as your host will run both linux and windows hosting

    for example the search engine might see this URL http://somedomain.com/contactus.html when the underlying "Rewrite" converts it to http://somedomain.com/index.php&page=contactus and the content of that is delivered when the URL http://somedomain.com/contactus.html is requested.

    Everyone goes on about improving rankings, its actually to help us poor humans more than anything because a simple URL is easy to remember like http://domainname/entrypage.ext than one that has ? & - + = and other artifacts in.

    What gets out of hand are those individuals that insist on taking URL rewriting to ridiculous levels and you get URLS like http://domainname/~/virtual/type/path/naming/convention where the ~ is a good indicator of this. Utterly pointless as it is IMHO just as bad as a http://somedomain.com/index.php&page=contactus type URL although I understand the reasoning as it is harder to guess the backend and how it might be rewritten.

    An SEM is a Scanning Electron Microscope, these have nothing to do with the internet and apache would have a hard time rewriting one of them
    We all have baggage to carry in life, unfortunately for me I always get the trolley with the wonky wheel...
    Code:
    Youre = {
          STILL_not_getting_it:function(){
               alert("YOU, the original poster / thread starter NEED to POST the code and NOT a LINK.");
          },
          MissingThePoint:function(msg){
                alert("You're missing the point. " + msg);
          }
    }
    Youre.STILL_not_getting_it();

    I have had many ask me what the difference between Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is, so I thought I might throw a couple of definitions out there.

    I am going to start with SEO, as it is a part of SEM. SEO is the act of optimising the HTML and other content of your website for relevant, targeted key phrases in order to attain higher natural listings than competing websites. SEO provides a cheaper long term solution for increased qualified traffic and generates customer inquiries that ultimately convert to sales.

    Now SEM is broader than SEO. It includes SEO and other areas to improve a sites visibility in search engine results pages, like paid listings and paid inclusions.

    You can think of SEM as more expensive and quite possibly more targeted, while SEO is free (not counting your time of course) and its purpose is to obtain better free search listings.

    Personally, I would start with SEO and then move onto SEM.

    Search engine marketing or SEM, refers mainly to the text advertisements which appear at the top or on the right hand side of search engine results pages. These advertising links are purchased mainly from Google Adwords and Yahoo whilst Search engine optimization or SEO refers to improving a web sites' natural and organic ranking in the search engine results page.
