    Some non technical tips for the good website designing.
    1. Don't annoy your visitors with pop-up windows.
    2. Include a way to get back to the home page, on every page.
    3. Include a menu on every page.
    4. Don't use frames.
    5. Avoid animation/flash and large image files.

    adamdavid333 tips are SEO centric so I don't think so they are non technical tips either.

    Nice Article about Do's and Dont's of Web Designing..My suggestion is to avoid Flash Content and multimedia since they are not search engine friendly..

    Use the 80-20 rule : What 20% of whatís on a page gives 80% of the value and content that people go there for? It could be the copy, some social proof (review snippets, testimonials, media badges), and a signup form or call-to-action button, for example. Thatís the 20% right there. On your website, as well as on each individual page, focus on displaying only the 20% of site elements that are delivering 80% of that usefulness.

Second, the navigation choices are generally deployed in an horizontal menu bar on the top of the site. Lastly, Get rid of clutter. Ensure pages don't have a lots of graphics or animated images that might draw the visitor's eyes away.

    That is about actual trend in web design – Flat Design. Simplicity has always been associated with convenience in interactions between a user and a mobile application or website. Great usability has always been a result of great design. Flatness has been around for quite a while, but the topic went surging once Apple introduced iOS 7, which retreats from its previous principles towards flat design.
