    How's my basic knowledge?

    Hey there,

I'm currently self-learning development with the intention of a career change. I'm 28 and it's rather overwhelming the amount of things I feel I need to pick up, but I'm getting there, slowly.

I've spent the majority of my time focusing on Javascript, which I'm enjoying, and will move on to a server-side language later. My goal is to focus on the dev side of things rather than the design as I'm certainly no designer, I'd love to build web apps and mobile apps too, ultimately.

With that said, I do feel it's important I get a good handle on HTML/CSS but my question is really, just how much is necessary?

I've knocked together a basic site with what I've learned so far (HTML/CSS), and wondered if I could get some feedback as to whether that's an adequate working knowledge to continue focusing on the development side?

I've put it up as a kind of temporary test site on my domain, please excuse the design as I'm not a designer at all, and definitely not a UX expert.

    Many thanks

Wow, don't view it on a mobile device!

I guess RWD is the next thing I need to look at.

I think HTML is more important and easier than CSS. Anyway is not bad if you understand something about CSS.

    Keep pressing forward

Thanks for posting this. Your story is eerily similar to mine so I decided to check your site out. In my opinion you are being too rough on yourself. Your website is visually pleasing and has a logical layout. I really didn't see any problems with the design of your website. However, some of the website's functionality is broken. I cannot make use of your embedded Facebook or Twitter buttons in either IE 9 or Firefox 17. All of your page navigation seems to work fine, as well as your contact links.

I feel overwhelmed every day of the week, which I why I felt compelled to answer your post. I am also 28 and spend more of my time "self-teaching" than I actually learn in the classroom. After three years of college, I've just cracked the halfway point in my studies (I slacked off during a few semesters). I've actually only taken two courses that are even remotely related to my major. I make up for this by spending hours a day working on sites like lynda, w3schools, and Pluralsight.com. There are seemingly limitless resources available on the web, so I try to stay positive knowing this.

Thanks so much for the comments.

Re: the site, some links (including the social media icons) are just placeholders as the site is purely fictional.

A bit about me; I graduated in architecture and ended up specialising in 3D visuals, which is what I work as currently. I don't like it at all though and I've had a very long standing passion for the web as a platform for design and development. I just find it so exciting and there's so much going on in the dev world that there's so many avenues to explore, both as a spectator and a creator I suppose.

Most importantly, I just love 'making stuff' with code. Or rather, I love the concept of it, my current skillset doesn't extend much further than a text adventure or currency convertor inside a JS console.

Regarding the design, I suppose it looks ok, but I really don't intend to focus on the visual design side of things. Just enough to craft a front-end where necessary.
