Nicely put, but HTML is almost as old as the WWW and it is a markup language not a programming language. Of course, it is really CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) that have been the cornerstone of design - HTML was never intended for presentation (layout) for originally it only manipulated text and hyperlinks. I do believe one of the most significant technologies of the future is going to be The Semantic Web - The Web of Data versus today's Web of Documents
