Display the content from the file

I want to display data which is in file into a text area using javascript can anybody help me with code?

this can be done easily if you use your browser on your own computer where the file exist...

generally it cannot be done if the file is on your computer/server and want JavaScript to use the file once the html file is on another users computer...

with that said it can be done via ajax or file upload...

So which is it?
