Content is the king of your site because visitors and search engines like only fresh content. Your content is to make user friendly so the traffic will be automatically increased.
Three types of link building there
Natural way is based upon your content but it takes some period to increase search engine ranking.
Manual is submitting your site on directories, emailing links for bloggers.
Self-created is very careful one do genuine way otherwise it will be treated as spam.

I think both are important, but I still think it's a good idea to focus on your content more. Specially when the site your building tend to be a little spammy like pharmaceuticals, online tutoring services or anything related to it, etc.

Nowadays due to panda and penguin update google is mainly focussing on good quality content. So i think so you should focus more on content. While writing the content you should keep in mind that it should be informative and fresh, do not copy content from other sites because that would make no use. Also you should incoporate the keywords which you want your website to rank in the content which you are writing.
Also keep in mind that keyword density should be about 4% to 6% of the entire content. Do not simply try to stuff keywords otherwise that would make no use of writing a content.

    Inbounding Traffic to Your Site

One of the most essential roles of content marketing is to inbound traffic to your website. This is a very powerful way to promote your expertise, niche, and/or unique selling proposition. So long as you include the right calls to action, the audience that engages with your content will be more likely to visit your website.

    Building Brand Awareness through Engagement

As the roots to inbounding traffic, the audience’s engagement with your content is what fuels the relationship. Here, quality and relevancy are paramount. Any content you publish is a reflection of your business and its brand. Be creative, but in a respectable context that relates to your target market.

Generating Natural Link Popularity for SEO

When content goes socially viral, it tends to attract a lot of popularity as a result. When people link to good content (link popularity,) it can earn a certain degree of authority. The primary measure of authority is typically a scale of 1-10 based on Google’s “PageRank” mechanism. So a webpage with a PageRank (PR) 6 is considered very high authority compared to a moderate PR 3. From a SEO standpoint, if webpage has a higher level of authority (or PageRank,) then the outbound links coming from that site will be more powerful.
