    What can I replace these variables with?

    PHP Code:
    $query "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM pixs";

    $total_pages mysql_fetch_array(mysql_query($query));

    $total_pages $total_pages[num];
    I'm having trouble entering these into my php editor...

    Any suggestions?

    Not sure what you mean by "I'm having trouble entering these into my php editor", but $total_pages[num] should have its array key quoted, e.g.: $total_pages['num'] (but note you do not quote integer array indexes).

    While you may be able to get away with not quoting it in certain situations, it will throw a notice-level warning when you do it in any case, and could have undesired side-effects (it essentially defines a constant on the fly at run-time).
