Hi, the world of web development is quite large. But as a starting point you should learn HTML. If you google 'HTML tutorial' I'm sure you will find lots of useful information about getting started.

Also think about if you are more interested in the front end (what the user sees in the browser and how it interacts with the user) or the back end (data access/storage, implementation of business rules, and all the programming that goes into that stuff). While it's good to know a lot about both "ends", unless you plan to be a one-person freelancer shop doing everything yourself, it's likely you'll be part of a team and specializing more in one than the other.

If you want to become your career in development then you have to go from the basics of a programming language. All basic must be clear and after that do the programming using any technique like the asp.net, java, php. Choose as per your choice. All techniques have their own benefits.

Is there much of a reason to learn more than one server side language? It seems like Php has all you really need.

Again, that probably depends on your goals: self-sufficient, one-person web site builder, or part of a team at a dot.com or even Fortune 500 company. While a solo freelancer can probably get away with doing everything in PHP/MySQL, if you're looking for a job with one of the "big boys", Java (not JavaScript) is still the most marketable programming skill. Various M$ languages/frameworks also play a bigger part (C#, .NET, M$ $QL, etc.), and Ruby (on Rails) has a non-trivial chunk of the server-side market.

In any case, the more languages you learn, the better you get at programming in any of them.
