    Unhappy CSS parse error nth-child

    HI
    I have a list of nth-child css, with 7 different blocks of color and am attempting to hover each block in a unique color.

    Currently the code below will not give me hover on any nth-child. I also get a parse error on each line.

    if I remove the second > in red on the (8) child, the hover works on all but only in one color (005f70) and it contaminates other lists i have in the menu, plus makes the page background have a hover reaction, which i don't want. I would appreciate advice. thanks.

    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(2) {background: #7E245A;} > :hover {color: #5C1A42}
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(3) {background: #F3A111;} > :hover {color: #BD7D0E}
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(4) {background: #1C427E;} > :hover {color: #16325F}
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(5) {background: #5E9D4C;} > :hover {color: #48773A}
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(6) {background: #91300D;} > :hover {background: #682209}
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(7) {background: #5F1A6B;} > :hover {background: #411049}
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(8) {background: #0091AC;} > :hover {background: #005F70}

    Your syntax is invalid. You can't use the :hover psuedo-class by itself as a selector, and selectors cannot appear after a ruleset (ie. the stuff in brackets {}).

    You probably need something like:
    Code:
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(2):hover li {background: #7E245A;}
    We'd need to see the HTML to know for sure.

    It's at http://amandasummers.com/template/me..._top_menu.html

    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(2) {background: #7E245A;} > :hover {color: #5C1A42}

    currently both > are isolating the color to the menu item, if i remove them, the color contaminates the drop down menu .

    i now have this, the hover is working but the color is contaminating the drop down menus.
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(2) {background: #7E245A;} > :hover { background-color: #5C1A42 }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(3) {background: #F3A111;} > :hover { background-color: #BD7D0E }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(4) {background: #1C427E;} > :hover { background-color: #16325F }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(5) {background: #5E9D4C;} > :hover { background-color: #48773A }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(6) {background: #91300D;} > :hover { background-color: #682209 }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(7) {background: #5F1A6B;} > :hover { background-color: #411049 }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(8) {background: #0091AC;} > :hover { background-color: #005F70}

    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(2) :hover { background-color: #5C1A42 }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(3) :hover { background-color: #BD7D0E }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(4) :hover { background-color: #16325F }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(5) :hover { background-color: #48773A }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(6) :hover { background-color: #682209 }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(7) :hover { background-color: #411049 }
    .mgmenu > li:nth-child(8) :hover { background-color: #005F70}
