    Adding JavaScript Arrays and alerting user

    Hi,

    I have a group of drop down lists. Can someone show me how to put each select name into an array and if field43[] + field44[] + field45[] + field[]46 is greater than 9, then an alert will tell the user that you can only choose a total count of 9 cases.

    HTML Code:
    <tr class="product-detail">
                    <td width="25%">BD Ultra-Fine&trade; 3/10mL half scale</td>
                    <td width="25%">31G x 15/64" (6mm)</td>
                    <td width="15%">324943</td>
                    <td width="10%"><select name="field43">
                        <option value="" selected="selected">--- Select ---</option>
                        <option value="1 Case">1 Case</option>
                        <option value="2 Cases">2 Cases</option>
                        <option value="3 Cases">3 Cases</option>
                        <option value="4 Cases">4 Cases</option>
                        <option value="5 Cases">5 Cases</option>
                        <option value="6 Cases">6 Cases</option>
                        <option value="7 Cases">7 Cases</option>

                  </tr>
                  <tr class="product-detail">

                    <td>324940</td>
                    <td><select name="field46">

                        <option value="2 Cases">2 Cases</option>

                        <option value="9 Cases">9 Cases</option>
                      </select></td>
                  </tr>
    Also, if they try to choose more than a total of 9, they shouldn't be able to.

    There are many ways to get what you want.

    No jQuery:
    Code:
    <script type="text/javascript">
            var total = 0;
            var allSelects;

            function changeHandler(e){
                total = 0;
                for (i=0;i<allSelects.length;i++){
                    total += parseInt(allSelects[i].options[allSelects[i].selectedIndex].value);
                }
                if(total > 9){
                    this.selectedIndex = 0;
                    alert("You cannot select more than 9");
                }
            }

            window.onload = function(){
                allSelects = document.getElementsByTagName('select');

                for (i=0;i<allSelects.length;i++){
                    allSelects[i].addEventListener('change',changeHandler);
                }
            }
        </script>
    With jQuery:
    Code:
    <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.10.1.min.js"></script>
        <script type="text/javascript">
            var total = 0;

            $(document).ready(function(){
                $("select").change(function(){
                    total = 0;
                    $("select").each(function(){
                        total += parseInt($(this).val());
                    });
                    if(total > 9){
                        $(this).val("0");
                        alert("You cannot select more than 9");
                    }
                })
            });
        </script>
    I also made a slight change to your HTML:
    HTML Code:
    <body>
    <table>
        <tr class="product-detail">
            <td width="25%">BD Ultra-Fine&trade; 3/10mL half scale</td>
            <td width="25%">31G x 15/64" (6mm)</td>
            <td width="15%">324943</td>
            <td width="10%"><select name="field43">
                    <option value="0" selected="selected">--- Select ---</option>
                    <option value="1">1 Case</option>
                    <option value="2">2 Cases</option>
                    <option value="3">3 Cases</option>
                    <option value="4">4 Cases</option>
                    <option value="5">5 Cases</option>
