Change field to automatically enter current date on insert query

I wish to change a field from varchar to automatically enter the current date upon insert of new rows. How should that field be structured? mySql version is 5.5.30, phpMyAdmin version is 3.5.5

If you make it a TIMESTAMP type, you can set the default value to NOW()
