    PHP HTML SQL question two column ouput

    my output is right but I would like for it to be in two columns and not just down the page. I have tried<div> <span> <table> with no luck...

    index.php cleaned up version

    Code:
    <?php

    $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM ads");
    $num_rows = mysql_num_rows($result);

    // Display the results
    echo "<h1>Total Posts ( ". $num_rows." )</h1>";

    $query=mysql_query("SELECT * FROM category where active = 1 ORDER BY name ASC");

    $x = 1;

    while($cat=mysql_fetch_assoc($query))

    {
    $result = mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ads WHERE category = $cat[id]");
    $count = mysql_result($result, 0);

    echo "<a href='' title='Announcements'>
    <img src='images/category/$cat[picture]' width='30' height='30' alt='$cat[picture]'>
    <b><font size='4'>$cat[name] ( ".$count." )</font><br>
    <font size='2'>$cat[description]</font></b><br><tr><td>
     ";

    $x++;

    }

     ?>
    here is some of the code I tied

    Code:
    <?php

    $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM ads");
    $num_rows = mysql_num_rows($result);

    // Display the results
    echo "<h1>Total Posts ( ". $num_rows." )</h1>";

    //echo "<table WIDTH='90%' BORDER='5'><tr><th>A</th><th>B</th></tr><tr><td>";
    $query=mysql_query("SELECT * FROM category where active = 1 ORDER BY name ASC");

    $x = 1;

    //echo "<table>";
    while($cat=mysql_fetch_assoc($query))

    {
    $result = mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ads WHERE category = $cat[id]");
    $count = mysql_result($result, 0);
    //echo $count;

    //$query = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM category where active = 1 ORDER BY name ASC");

    //while ($temp = mysql_fetch_array($query)) {
    //echo "<div class='widgetLoan'>";
    //echo "<div class='title'><h6>".$temp['name']."</h6><span class='widgetLoanCat'>Category</span></div>";
    //echo "<div class='num'><a href='#' class='blueNum'>".$temp['description']."</a></div>";
    //echo "</div>";
    //}
    //echo "<div>{$cat['picture']} {$cat['name']} {$cat['description']} {$cat['start']}</div>\n";

    ?>

    <!--div class="main">
        <div class="topRow">Major column</div>
        <div class="leftCol">C1</div>
        <div class="rightCol">C2</div>
    <div-->

    <?php

    //echo "<br><img src='images/category/$cat[picture]' width='30' height='30' alt='$cat[picture]'>
    //<tr><td>" . $cat['name'] . "</td><td> " . $cat['description'] . "</td>
    //</tr>"; //these are the fields that you have stored in your database table employee

    echo "<a href='' title='Announcements'>
    <img src='images/category/$cat[picture]' width='30' height='30' alt='$cat[picture]'>
    <b><font size='4'>$cat[name] ( ".$count." )</font><br>
    <font size='2'>$cat[description]</font></b><br><tr><td>
     ";

    $x++;

    }
    //echo "</table>";
    //echo "</table>";
     ?>

    you can do what David Walsh did here: http://davidwalsh.name/html-mysql-php
    just change the query with yours and adjust the fields to be displayed.
