What do I need to create websites professionally?

    Hi everyone

I am setting up my own graphic design business and would love to get more into web. I have a minor on web design, and basic knowledge in HTML and CSS (I created this website, www.fepetportraits.co.nz though the code may make some of you flinch).

I enjoy doing web and would love to be able to offer it as part of the whole package, but at this stage I don't know nearly enough to offer it professionally. There is a web course nearby, but I am a little reluctant to pay 10 grand and live off noodles for the next year. Especially when I probably know some of it.

I have been trying to find the best online places, preferably something a bit structured, but there is so much information out there and its little like trying to find a needle in a haystack. At this point I figured the best place to start was find out exactly what I need to know and go from there. I don't want to get into huge complicated sites, but I really need to know more of the basics, forms, CMS, mobile sites etc. Basic animation would be good. I used to know flash, but I've heard thats not used anymore anyway.

Can anyone give me a basic list of the languages I need to learn (and what they might do), silly I know, but its a bit confusing figuring out what does what?

    Thanks very much!

You might try building websites with a CMS like WordPress. You already know the basics. Handcoding may be nostalgic and romantic, but it's not the way to go these days. There are many on-line non-credit courses - Ed2Go. And a few good books would do the trick. And I think your website code is clean and straight-forward and produced a very decent first site.
