    Website Comparison Review please :)

    Hi all,

    First of all, many thanks for viewing this thread. We're after a review on our price comparison website as it currently stands.

    This website is a price comparison website which allows customers to find companies within their local area who supply their chosen vinyl products (out of the 12 searchable products including vehicle window tint, headlight tint, vehicle signage etc) Once chosen, they simply enter their postcode and select the area zone in which they'd like to search within (such as 10, 20 miles..etc)

    Once searched, the customer will be able to view the most suited companies that are willing to install their product and compare their location and prices.

    Once the company has been selected, the customer can then move on to view additional products, prices, contact details, opening hours etc.

    We allow the customer to make a search within seconds that would usually eat up alot of time searching through search engines, contacting companies for prices etc.

    There's still work to do on the website as a whole - such as text especially on the homepage where the opening two sentences as well as green tick points need to be completed. We will require some help and advice regarding what is best to say here so if anyones interested, please contact me us.

    Below are the details for the test login to view our website as it sits.

    All input and advice will be much appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Hello,

    The website looks nice an clean. Congratulation. I like the minimal, flat look. The colours go well with each other. I am not a fan of the texture used on the blue blackground. I think a simple blue background would be more useful.

    I think the buttons coudl follow the flat design, like the social media share buttons in the header.

    Keep up the good work!
    All the best,
    Tim

    Hi Tim,

    Many thanks for the reply and for your feedback.

    We do agree that we did have some concerns about the texture of the blue background and may look to adjust it. I'm not sure if you have a spare few minutes and photoshop we don't currently have photoshop so would you be able to make an adjustment at all please? Just so we can see how it looks.

    Which buttons do you mean please regarding the adjusting?

    We're also not too sure about the look of the buttons and the '120 miles from .....' both on the company pages - what do you think of this?

    Many thanks again, much appreciated indeed.

    Hello again,

    First off, changing the blue div would just be changing the background from texture to a simple blue one. I am not an experienced PhotoShop user, so I con't help you with a mockup. I would suggest however the following colors: http://ios7colors.com. They are the new trend after all.

    Second of all, your site does not appear to be responsive, so i would suggesting trying to rebuild the front end using a framework. The best option in my opinion is Bootstrap3 and you can get it here:http://getbootstrap.com. If now is not the time for rebuilding the front end, you can just have it mind.

    Third, the buttons. My first look was on the Search button, which seems to be the 'call to action' on the page. I think a flat design would be better, that is, removing the shadow on the element. If you are searching for button design inspiration, i would also suggest Bootstrap, or a bit more customized.

    I will also give you an example: http://bit.ly/1ivnXFo . This is something done just following the Bootstrap design and adding an iOS7 look.

    Also, the search button should have a pointer at hover, showing it is actionable.

    Hope i was of help.

    All the best,
    Tim

    Hi Tim,

    Many thanks for your reply and apologies for the delay.

    We're even thinking would it be best to change the entire blue block on each of the page for another colour - do you feel it's too strong on the eye or do you believe adjusting it to a simple flat blue colour of that shade would be enough? Thank you for the link for that too.

    Sorry but what do you mean by the site doesn't appear very responsive? Do you mean loading times etc? As origionally it was fast but we have had the design / look of the website changed.

    Thank you for your feedback on the idea for the search button - will be taken on board.

    Also referring to the search button - you state it should have a hover showing it's actionable but what we do have is the slight adjustment of effect on the button occuring during hover - what do you think to this?

    Many thanks - much appreciated,

    I like the clean design, and the textured background has gone, which is good. The only fault, and it is a big one, is that the layout does not appear to be "responsive". I.e. The body of the page is fixed at around 1024 pixels wide. I haven't tested the site on an actual smartphone, but if it behaves the same as when the window on a large display is reduced, then that really is a no-no for a new site. The layout should be able to respond down to (at least) 480 pixels width without side-scrolling, and ideally down to 320px.

    PS Ignore the above comment. I've just viewed the code and it has a transition to "mobile" mode at device-width of 720px. That is a good way for a live site to work, but is more helpful for general testing if you substitute "width" for "device-width" in a test version. I.e.:

    <link rel="stylesheet" media='screen and (min-device-width: 721px)' href="http://www.compareawrap.co.uk/css/style.css" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" media="screen and (max-device-width: 720px)" href="http://www.compareawrap.co.uk/css/mobile.css" />

    Could be amended to:

    <link rel="stylesheet" media='screen and (min-width: 721px)' href="http://www.compareawrap.co.uk/css/style.css" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" media="screen and (max-width: 720px)" href="http://www.compareawrap.co.uk/css/mobile.css" />

    for test purposes.

    That would allow us to see the transition on a larger screen. That, or at least advise us that there are media-specific stylesheets, and we need to test it on a genuine small-screen device to see the mobile mode.

    Also, technically, the media-specific stylesheets do not seem to be implemented as well as they could. There are two potential flaws in the above code:

    1. There does not appear to be a default for browsers that do not understand media-specific code (IE8 and below).

    2. It does not appear to cater for devices that identify themselves as "handheld" rather than "screen".

    So it may be better to use:

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://www.compareawrap.co.uk/css/style.css" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" media="screen and (max-device-width: 720px)" href="http://www.compareawrap.co.uk/css/mobile.css" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" media="handheld" href="http://www.compareawrap.co.uk/css/mobile.css" />

    Thank you for the reply and apologies for the delayed response.

    Sorry all that coding you've stated above doesn't actually mean anything to me so could you explain the benefit of adjusting those codes?

    Thank you for your time and effort with those codes though, much appreciated indeed

    More feedback from anyone willing would also be hugely appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Just another point - we're looking to adjust the blue blocks to #455c96 - what do you think of this shade of standard blue colour?

    Thanks,

    Just to add, I've tested the website on desktops, a number of mobiles and tablets and all respond fine as far as I can see.

    Thanks,

    Hi Alexdavid - this is far from spam as I'm asking if anyone else has any feedback to offer. What you've stated is non-necessary and is spam in all honestly. Thanks,

    We use "no follow" on links, so there is really no SEO value in posting a link in a message on this forum. You might get some referral traffic, but you wont' get any 'link juice'.

    This is a web development focused site, so to some extent, reviewing and commenting on other sites fits. If something appears to be purely a spam move, then the mods will deal with it accordingly.

    Let's get this thread back on focus.

    Hi,

    No one in this thread has stated they would like an SEO Company. I as the thread starter, are looking for feedback for this design.

    Thanks,
