Debugging PHP on a Windows computer

Sorry if this has been asked already many times.

How do I debug a php program that is residing on a Linux server somewhere if I use a Windows computer?

If you want to run it on your PC, you can simply install everything you need there to make a WAMP stack. Easiest way is with one of the installer packages out there. I like Wampserver, some prefer XAMPP, and there are a few others.

If you want to more precisely emulate your production environment, you can install Virtualbox, then create a Linux virtual machine that runs the same OS and software versions as your live host does. This is more fiddly and will likely take more time for you to get running correctly than just installing Wampserver and running under Windows, so you'll have to decide for yourself which way you feel is the better trade-off.
