W3C (world wide web consortium) The organization's purpose is to develop open standards so that the Web evolves in a single direction rather than being splintered among competing factions.

That has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the W3C... No, seriously. They are NOT related in any way, shape or form.

Though it's a common mistake people make because W3Schools allows people to think so, it's why they choose their name all those years ago; to prey on the ignorance of people new to the field.

    http://www.w3fools.com

That site explains a LOT of the problem, and provides links to some better alternatives.

Yes actually, it does -- because their certificates mean exactly two things.

They aren't qualified to be handing out certificates in a blasted thing; they are not a recognized educational institution, they are not associated in any way with any of the bodies responsible for making the specifications... and you know what that means?

Their "certificates" are one big giant sleazeball SCAM, worth less than a sheet of bog roll.

Though to be fair, I say the same thing about real college degrees in IT, particularly web development... YMMV

The only answer that was really needed for the original question:

W3C means: World Wide Web Consortium. W3C is to lead the Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines. In addition to HTML and CSS standards, the W3C also provides standards for web graphics (such as PNG) and audio and video on the Web.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards.
