IMHO it's one of those things that if you need to use it, you've probably done something wrong.

    In rough terms -

A canonical URL is used when you have a duplicate article or piece of content on the web. The canonical link points to the original copy of the content. This is a way to tell the search engine that you are knowingly copying a piece of content and that you want to give credit to the original article. The search engine will be less likely to penalize the duplicate content and will generally give higher ranking to the original article (which would be fair).

If you duplicate content, you should always tag it with a canonical link.

Regardless of what deathshadow stated, there are times when duplicating content makes a lot of sense, and thus the canonical url comes into play. (I should add, however, that most of the time you should avoid duplicating content.)

Hence the word "probably" in my statement -- there are legitimate usage cases, but as you said, try to avoid it in the first place.

Though lately it seems like some folks are blind to words like "probably" and "likely"

Cononical urls issue in seo is very common let me explain it with an example, if your website open with www and with out www, then google considered this as a cononical urls, one page having to different urls, url must be redirect on one condition either with www or with out www.

Canonical URL defined as the preferred URL for the page content to be indexed in the Major Search Engines. Canonical URL is used by the Major Search Engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. Many websites have two or more links of the same content with different parameter. In this time Search Engines are confused about Which One is needed to be Index?

Canonical url is normally used to improve link and ranking signals for content available through multiple URL structures or via syndication. cononicalization is simply a method of picking up the best url with multiple choices, main home pages. It is a way to pic best represent.

When a resource can be accessed via multiple URLs like www and without www, these URLs are called the canonical URLs. All alias URLs for a resource should redirect to the canonical URL to enforce its authority.

This canonical issue is arise when Google treats the same URL differently. Google confuse to understand that http://www(dot)something(dot)com and http://something(dot)com are same and treats these as different URL. Which divides your backlinks in two parts, and Google thinks the second URL site content is the copy of first one. This is a serious issue. You can find this issue by simply typing your URL in Google like- site:www(dot)your-site-name. If your site URL appears in SERP with both www and without www than your site is suffering from canonical issue. You can fix it by adding canonical tag at home page or by using webmaster tool.

Or by doing what Matt Cutts is quoted as saying in the wikipedia article, and setting one of them up on your server to 301 to the other, skipping the need to add crap to the markup for no good reason.

I've been looking at this thread and scratching my head wondering why anyone would use canonical links for subdomain versus doing a 301-type redirect.

You'd use a canonical link when you have two (or more) copies of an article. With the www.<domain> vs <domain> you wouldn't duplicate your site or content, you'd have one version that you redirect to and thus only one copy of each article. As such, canonical makes no sense in that situation.

Where canonical make sense is if you have more than one copy of a piece of content.

Some times we all see that Google penalizes a site for having two urls that indicates the same page. canonical urls are using to prevent this. When Google crawls the page, it will see the Canonical URL and this is what Google recognizes as the "official" URL of the page. It will use this URL to index the site instead of the one used to access the page.
