image background

ok i was wondering in photoshop how do u make the background transparent? i wanted to make some pics for my website but i dont want a background so i can use them all the time and not have to edit the pic just cause i want a different background color. thank you for any help/web tutorials posted(just incase i forget to post that after you post your help)

in photoshop, the easiest way to make something semi-transparent is:
assuming you have a jpg, double click Background in the layers tab.
click the Opacity dropdown
slide to the desired location.

well i tried that and for some odd reason it keeps making the background white? if you know what is causing this thank you for th reply if not i understand

Select the image area you want to have visible. You can do this by first selecting the background and clicking "Select>Inverse." It'll give you a good grab.

Next, copy and paste the selection to a new RGB file. Now turn off the background layer.

If you have PS 5.5 or higher version, click "File>Export to Web."

This feature will give you the option of a transparent background. There's a check box to click for activating that.

Those are the steps I take. Could be different for lots of folks.

You can't make JPEG's transparent, can you? I thought the only way to make an image have a transparent background was to use a GIF or a PNG...
