Registering my own domain name

Is it possible for me to register a domain name by myself rather than paying a fee to a company? As long as I have my own server, is this possible? How do I register my own domain name? Thanks.

To register a domain name you have to pay somebody, either a host who will register it on your behalf or the appropriate organisation which handles the top-level domain you want, if they allow direct registrations. For example, registering a .co.uk domain can be done directly with Nominet but it's much easier to have an agent do it for you.

You're probably better off registering through an agent such as an ISP. It will vary depending on the host and naming organisation, but it's usually cheaper and means you don't need to run your own nameservers. For example, I believe Nominet charge £80 for direct registration of a .uk domain, whereas I pay about £4 per domain to my host.

the way it works is there's a single company who dishes out the domains to licensed domain registration companies (they pay about $5 a domain and you pay about $7-10 normally). If you're not a registered company, there's no way you can register your own domain.
