Bastard means something though: a child born out of wedlock. I think. But anyways, arse is fine, but ass isn't? The entire idea behind profanity is ridiculous; insults and harassment are one thing, but self-deprecation is another...

In school we're currently studying Midsummernights Dream and the teacher had to spend ages explaining to one person the difference between an arse and an ass.
