Starting a new website on an old domain a bad idea?

To make a really long story short, i am inheriting a domain from a friend that basically let his website hosting lapse so his website it gone.

I am looking to use the domain and start my own site on it

my question is basically is it even worth it to try and start a new site on a domain that had about 1000 posts already. Would all the previous posts become dead links since it was previously established? Would search engines make the change for me once the site has been crawled?

Basically will I get any traction if I start a new site on a domain that already had a site?

    Thanks

    Hello,

Please check your old domain status. Is this domain penalty free from search engine? Kindly remove old link from your old domain. It would affect search engine.

    Thanks
