    encryption

this question may not make sence because I'm very new to web development, but basically I'm wondering how I setup a web server to encrypt web pages to be sent. is it even something I have to setup or does it happen automatically when I buy a ssl cert

    thanks

An SSL cert will do the trick for https requests, with regard to encrypting the traffic between the user's browser and your web server. You may want to add something to the web server configuration to redirect any http requests to https. A typical method on Apache is to have the following in a .htaccess file, but there are numerous options depending on your actual web server type/configuration.
    Code:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
    RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L]
