    How about adding an else block after the if block and log/output some debug info? E.g.: http://php.net/manual/en/mysqli.error.php

    You can't do an insert with a where clause since by definition the where condition should NOT exist. You're doing an insert!

    One does an insert of all of the fields for the record. Not just one field.

    So since you seem to want to insert a record for a user id that is not on file you should do:

    $q = "insert into tablename (user, mest) values('$id', '$date')";
    $results = MySQlI_query($link,$q);
    JG
    PS - If you're posting here you should be using:

    error_reporting(E_ALL);
    ini_set('display_errors', '1');

    $id is already inserted but the if condition is not working mysqli_query($link,"SELECT user FROM inventario WHERE user = '$id'")

    Again - you cant do an insert with a where clause. I'm not questioning the truth of your select query, just the syntax of your insert query.

    An UPDATE OR INSERT would work, if the item exists, its updated, if not, its created.

    .
    As far as the original post is concerned, the main problem is that the call to mysqli_query() will always return true, regardless of whether or not it finds a match (unless the query syntax is wrong, in which case it will always return false). So to use that program logic, you'd have to fetch the first row or get a result row count after doing the query to determine if you want the if block to trigger or not.
