I help operate a subscription based website that would like to offer free trials but i’m not sure how to do this without the free trial option being abused.(people who get free trials forever) Our merchant provider doesn’t allow us to check the validity of a credit card without making a purchase. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
two immediate suggestions come to mind:
1. Change merchant providers. This should be part of the service -- at no additional charge.
2. Disallow email addresses to be used more than once. Sure some people will just use multiple email accounts, but there is very little you can do about that. You can limit that type of abuse by disallowing yahoo, gmail, hotmail and all those other free email services.
