Question about a tag

The old proprietory tags <blink> and <marquee> had their uses, in making pages impressive to the naive (if not to the more experienced.)

My question is this: What was the use of the <plaintext> tag?

From the HTML 2.0 spec:

NOTE - In a previous draft, HTML included a <PLAINTEXT> element that is similar to the <LISTING> element, except that there is no closing tag: all characters after the <PLAINTEXT> start-tag are data.
