    using access key with valid xhtml

    got this code:

    <li> <a href="../index.htm" accessKey="h" title="Homepage">
    <div class="underline">H</div>ome</a> </li>

    the xhtml validator does not like the nested <div class="underline"> within the <a> tag.

    anyone know how to correct?

    Yes the <div> is block level and the list anchor isn't use the <span> and not the <div>.

    now it says no attribute accesskey.

    do i have to change the doctype?

    its currently

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

    No, I hope you have something like:
    ...
    <ul>
    <li>
    <a href="../index.htm" accesskey="h" title=
    "Homepage"><span class="underline">H</span>ome</a>
    </li>
    </ul>
    ...

    Though I don't really think it is too sensible to use underlined letters.

    Since there is a lot of conflict with assistive devices and programs I mainly stick to numbers for that reason; http://www.xhtmlcoder.com/worthvalley/ with exception of skip.
