I get so fed up of my host's downtime. Recommend new hosts..
I'm currently hosted by Bluehost; I chose them because of the bandwidth-to-cost ratio (when I signed up I got 60gb per month, for 167 bucks every 2 years), and the support rating they had.
Well, they certainly don't have that great of an uptime. Once my server was down for a few days straight.. Not cool. It is down again, so I think it is time to seriously consider some new hosting options.
I need the following:
at least 1gb storage
at least 50 pop e-mail accounts, with webmail access, SMTP, and forwarding
Linux/FreeBSD hosting with a shell account (this is an absolute must)
at least 60gb bandwidth per month, but I would really prefer 100gb+
PHP/MySQL, Perl, SSI, CGI-Bin
FTP
logfile/stat stuff (AWStats is great)
cron
SSL, Flash support
at least 10 free subdomains, 15+ preffered
I prefer apache httpd 1.3.x (I'm not a huge fan of httpd 2.x).
cpanel is something I definately enjoy, but I can probably live without it.
Of course, the biggest part of all.. uptime. I hate losing potential visitors because of downtime, and it looks unprofessional since I run my own web design business off of the domain.
Well, my web server is back up, finally. Yay.
Anyway, the kicker is I need this to be as low-cost as possible. somewhere around 200 bucks a month is ideal, but I'm betting I won't be able to find what I need that cheap.

i have been using ipower for several years....great for sites in need of a lot of server space and bandwidth and other goodies. awesome uptime and great customer service. may be something you like.
He is recommending them because I think that is part of their policy. Use us, but promote us. They are probably the big name in hosting that I know of, but that might be largely because people who use them talk about them so much. I know one person used them, didn't like them, and is switching back to Page-Zone. I use iPowerweb. I have been satisfied for the most part, but you would have to look at what it cost to go beyond their package that they offer. If you are talking more than one DB, then that adds to your cost. I am switching over to A Small Orange very soon. Did you actually mean $200 a year, or a month? Per month will be way easy to do. A year, not so much.
200 a year, yeah. And I do need multiple DBs, forgot to mention that (10 MySQL) :/ I may have to cut back on bandwidth needs in order to be able to afford better hosts.
