Want to display <li> element without indent

I want to display bulleted <li> items without the indent. I tried using the <li> tag without the <ul> tag, and that worked, but it is not valid XHTML. Does anyone have an idea of how I can accomplish this in valid XHTML? (I suspect that it would involve CSS, which is why I've posted here instead of the HTML forum). Thank you in advance.
