intergrate database and CMS content into .html

hi,
i have a quick question although it might be a stupid one. I'v seen alot of site that uses .html extensions yet it has information retreived from a database, it also has header, footer and navigation that are dynamic on every page.

My question is how is this possible, i really want to find out. I know alot about html, css and abit of php and mysql so you can get technical

a couple of website that i can remember usin this scheme are : www.about.com
www.cbc.com
www.gamespot.com

You can configure the server to parse pages with all kinds of extensions, i.e. you can tell it to pass *.htm* to the PHP or the SSI or whatever processor you have available.

i did acouple of research on google on how to parse .php into .html they recommened adding "application/x-httpd-php .php .html" into .htaccess and include this file on every directory.
Can i just add "application/x-httpd-php .php .html" into mimes.types? i tried it but it didnt work

I did it!! all i did was added "AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php5 .php4 .php3 .html" in http.conf and it worked

I tried doing it through .htacess and mimes.type but it didnt work
