Custom DLL file

I am newer to writing custom DLL files. I have Visual Studio .net 05 and want to right some of my include files into a DLL. One example would be my database connection functions. Can anyone help me with how to write a dll for asp using visual studio, or can I write a dll class from notepad and then compile it? What do I need to get started
