how to create a basic login/pass form to access password protected directories?

Security is not a MAJOR issue, as i know a LOT of people will say that there are all types of ways you should do this.

but, the application is just this.

On my site, i have all the content, but on the right i want to be able to provide a login/password form that will send a user to the
message boards/their own project development area.

There isnt major traffic at all, so its not like i have to worry about people hacking in, but areas like the message board are more for my friends, jokes, party pictures, etc...and dont really pertain to the content of the site. I CAN just provide a link to it, and the windows type LOGIN/PASS box will pop up, prompting an entry, which will log them in and take them to that area, but I wanted something that will basically BYPASS this popup login/pass window, and send the info directly to that page, using the info they provided and open a designated page BASED on what they entered.

Is this something that is possible without MAJOR coding knowledge?
I can understand php and .asp and figure out what variables to change, etc. etc. I just dont need this to be a LARGER project than it needs to be.

    Did i explain this clearly?

Thanks for any help or pointing me in the right direction...

Im going to continue to try and search more on here.
