With all the Java books out there it's hard to find one which will teach you the basics--and will not stop teaching you even after you move on to more advanced topics. Beginning Java does just that. This book lays it on thick, but author Ivor Horton makes it fun to learn about Java objects, classes, Stream input and output, GUI programming, the JDBC, and more.

With all the source code in this 1000+ page book, a companion CD is pretty much a requirement, but Sybex has instead put all the source up on a companion Web site for the book's readers. The Web site features all the source code from the book, along with updates. Beginning Java is a learn-by-example book which provides the reader with examples for each of the concepts that are presented. Although this book is not what you'd call light reading, Ivor manages to have a good time and teach Java programming at the same time, and that makes the learning process very effective.
