Linkbot Pro 4.0:
The Best Gets Better
By David Fiedler
We really hate it when there's not much to complain
about!
I've always figured Tetranet Software
had the market for link checking software sewn up about as tightly as Microsoft
did for operating systems...not by virtue of monopoly control in Tetranet's case,
but just because their Linkbot Pro product was so intuitive and powerful.
So while many companies in that position might just sit there and gather up
the money, Tetranet has been busy working on a new version. Linkbot
Pro 4.0 is not just an improved version; they've added features that make
perfect sense when you hear about them but you might never have thought to ask
for!
System Requirements
Linkbot Pro is quite a rewrite...not only does it claim to be able to completely
check a site with hundreds of thousands of links (not a misprint, but I'm glad
I don't have to run that site :-)...but it can do so with a system I wouldn't
give to a 4-year-old kid:
- IBM PC or compatible
- Windows 95, 98 or NT
- 32 bit Internet connection
- 8 MB RAM (16 recommended)
- 20 MB free hard disk space
- MS Internet Explorer (optional but required for internal browsing feature)
As a matter of fact, my 4-year-old kid has 64 MB of RAM and about 4 GB free,
but his site isn't big enough for the Pro version of Linkbot yet anyway. And if
yours isn't either -- less than 100 pages total -- I have good news for you...you
qualify to get Linkbot
Express free from Tetranet Software. It's not quite as powerful as
Linkbot Pro, but the price is right...and when your site gets bigger, I know what
product you'll be wanting.
Linkbot Pro sells for $295, which includes a year of free updates directly
off Tetranet's Web site.
Needless to say, attempting to run a site of almost any size is a difficult
enough task, but if you have links to pages on other sites, things can go to heck
in a hurry without some software support. Most top authoring tools (such as FrontPage,
Dreamweaver, Fusion, and HomeSite) have some link checking capabilities, but none
of them can begin to approach the single-purpose intensity of Linkbot Pro.
