Making Sense of Site Management Software Part 3
By Scott Clark
The Administrator
The Web Connect Administrator is the main part of Web Connect. Using the
Administrator, you can specify the project(s) that you and your team members are working
on, and indicate users that can access the project or even specific files within the project.
The Administrator makes use of the tabbed windows that we are all so familiar with.
Information on each of the seven tabs allows you to specify more details about the project,
such as:
- Projects. The Projects tab is where you name each project that you work on. Projects
can either be local or on another machine that is accessed via the server.
- HTML. The HTML tab is used to set up the colors, graphics and footers for the Web
pages that make up Web Connect.
- HTTP. The HTTP tab is used to configure direct HTTP access to Web Connect.
- Types. This tab is used to define MIME types based on the file extension.
- Options. The Options tab is where you turn logging on or off and set the refresh rate.
- Security. The Security tab is used to create access templates for limiting user file access.
- Addresses. The Addresses tab allows you to restrict access by IP address.
After specifying all the project information in the Administrator, members of the project (or
guests) can log on to the Web Connect server either by itself or in conjunction with your
HTTP server. After giving their password, they move on to a page that allows them to
choose which project to go to. By moving forward into a specific project, the member is
presented with a list of possible project files that they can "check out." As they click on any
of these files, they move on to a project file information page that lets the member check out
any previous version of the file. The file can be locked, so that no one else can save any
changes to it (although they can still view it), or it can be left unlocked. After is it checked
back in, the file is unlocked and can once again be edited by others.
I found StarTeam Web Connect to be an easy-to-use site management system that can
greatly enhance the productivity and effectiveness of a Webmaster or development team. I
was able to set up and access a site using Web Connect, check out a file, edit it, and check
it back in when I was done. Although the documentation needs some work, the program
has a very fast learning curve and can enable the distributed developer to be a secure,
productive member of your development team.
Web Integrity
MKS Web Integrity is a distributed management solution for changing and maintaining
Web content. Using Web Integrity, a developer can:
- Freely make changes to a Web site without any assistance from the Webmaster or team
leader.
- Re-create past documents with 100 percent accuracy.
- Safely record new versions of documents for later use.
- Easily view a document's full history.
- See an audit trail of changes within a document--who, what and when.
- Lock documents for editing, stopping one author from overwriting another.
