More on Shockwave Audio
So, has everyone seen the wonders of Shockwave Audio yet? I can't help but wonder how the people at RealAudio are reacting to this new audio product on the Internet.
Since many of you sent mail asking what I thought were the hottest Shockwave Audio sites around, I delved into what's out there so that I could serve as a guide this week as we seek out some inspiration.
Many of you mentioned that it was difficult to explore all the links provided in the Macromedia Shockwave Gallery. I know many of you don't have the time to go looking at every site, so I decided that this week we would link to a list I have prepared of some sites that are really well produced. Remember the best place to catch all the latest and greatest Shockwave action is Macromedia's Vanguard Gallery.
Some sites you should check out!
Capitol Records Jukebox
MusicNet
Turntable Media
Internet Underground Music Archives
Waterdragon
M/B Interactive
You'll need the Shockwave plug-in (the latest version with Audio) to check out these sites. If you don't have it installed from last week, just download it from Macromedia's Shockwave Download Center.
Also make sure your using a 28.8 connection or better. I have had limited success with a 14.4, but using a connection like this leaves you in the hands of the developer. Shockwave Audio can be developed for connections in this speed range, but I highly recommend using a 28.8 or better connection to check out this new technology. Most developers seem to have created files, and buffers in the files, that just aren't optimized for playback on connections slower than a 28.8 modem.
Anyway, I am currently working on several new Shockwave Audio sites and examples (some quite unusual ones, I might add) for columns in the near future. One example is a Shockwave Audio site for Warr Guitars. The Warr Guitar is a very unusual instrument that allows musicians to play guitar and bass at the same time. I have been working with Mark Warr on his new site, and the revised site (including Shockwave Audio) should be available soon. This site will be one of the largest Shockwave Audio sites on the Internet thanks to the efforts of some star musicians that play the Warr Guitar.
Until next week, look at the sites above, wait on the Warr Guitar site, and as always feel free to ask as many questions as you would like about this new feature for Shockwave. Next week will move on to greater things. But, will they include the Warr Guitar site?
